About the piece
Beethoven set Schiller's poem in the finale of his Ninth in 1824. The tune spans only a sixth and moves almost entirely by step — which is exactly why anyone can sing it. It has been the anthem of the Council of Europe since 1972.
Public domain. The author died more than seventy years ago, and this engraving is our own — no edition right applies.
