sforzato (sf, sfz)
a single sharp accent

A sudden emphasis on one note, independent of the surrounding volume. In a quiet passage an sf is quiet and still sharp.
Dynamics
sfz (sforzato) is a single emphasis on one note, fp (fortepiano) a loud attack that continues soft at once. Both apply to that one note only; afterwards the previous level holds.
