Grace note
a small note before
In the score
What it means
A small note printed before the main one. With a stroke through the stem it is short and takes almost no time; without the stroke it takes its time from the main note.
Ornaments
The small note has a stroke through its flag and is played as short as it possibly can be. It takes almost nothing from the main note: it sits on the beat, and the main note follows immediately.
